ANNVILLE, Pa. - Lebanon Valley powered its way into the Rinso Marquette Tournament championship game, riding five scorers in double digits to dispatch of Neumann, 87-47, in the season opener.
The Dutchmen (1-0) combined strong bench play with hot shooting in the second half, led by a superb debut from freshman
Lexie Lantz, who poured in 20 points in just 15 minutes off the bench, and a 14-point, 16-rebound double-double by
Caitlin Bach.
Lebanon Valley will play Baruch Saturday at 3 p.m. for the championship, in a rematch of last year's NCAA First Round game that LVC won 59-53.
Sophomore transfer
Bridget Rothert had 14 points in her first game as a Dutchman, and
Kiely Chaklos (10 points) and
Lauren Ruhl (10 points, nine rebounds) were also in double digits. LVC's bench provided plenty of punch, accounting for 42 of LVC's 87 points as the Dutchmen slowly but steadily wore down a short-benched Neumann squad in the second half.
Jessica Schlesman led Neumann with 14 points, and JoHanna Metzger had a strong nine-point, 13-board night.
The Dutchmen led wire-to-wire, opening on buckets by Bach and Chaklos before pushing the lead to double-digits at 17-6 after consecutive buckets by Lantz. The Dutchmen kept pouring in the points, and led by 17 at the half after
Taylor Umbrell sank a three-pointer before the break.
Neumann kept the lead from increasing to open the second half, but an 8-2 run mid-half by LVC blew the lead to 20, and the Knights were held scoreless over a 4:27 span later in the half as LVC built an insurmountable advantage to win running away.
Freshman
Ellen Bair handed out five assists in her first career start, and
Peyton Carper had a career-best game with seven points and eight boards. LVC committed just 12 turnovers in the game while shooting 43.8 percent from the floor, including 55.2 percent in the second half.
In the nightcap, Baruch beat Delaware Valley 64-58 behind 21 points and 11 rebounds by Sheridan Taylor and 18 points and 14 boards from Alicea Ulmer. Del Val was paced by Eireann Anastasi's 19 points and five three-pointers by Kelsey Kilpatrick. Del Val and Neumann will play in the consolation game Saturday at 1 p.m.
