Lebanon Valley 2, Delaware 6
HERSHEY, Pa. – The #21 Lebanon Valley ice hockey team became the first team in school history to play an outdoor contest in the month of January on Tuesday. With wind chill adjustment, the Dutchmen played in near-zero temperatures and were hit with a 6-2 loss to #17 Delaware.
Heavy winds and a barrage of slapshots during pregame warm ups combined to cause enough damage to the glass behind the south side goal to force a 40-minute delay to the start of the game.
When play resumed, Delaware came out hot, scoring three goals in the first 10 minutes of the game. Mark Zeszut, Connor Moore, and Marcello DeAngelis each came away with goals.
Jimmy McNally scored off a faceoff in the first minute of the second period to put the Dutchmen (19-4) on the board. LVC picked up its second and final goal of the night with three minutes to play in the period on a wrister by
Dylan Kapp.
Andy Thurby assisted on both goals;
Danny Willey was credited with the second assist on Kapp's score.
Delaware (18-8-1) scored in the second period and twice in the third to round out their win. Christian Tasker scored midway through the second period, and Chris Volonnino and Ryan Pate gave the Blue Hens added insurance goals in the final period.
LVC was outshot 42-29. Matt Turner played the entire game in goal, making 36 saves.
Off the ice, the team completed its second jersey auction of the season. Each specially designed Dutchmen Outdoor Classic jersey was auctioned in support of the Mario Lemieux Foundation. Like Lemieux, former LVC icer Tim Bodenheimer was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Disease. While Bodenheimer was able to beat the disease, the team's participation with the foundation is in his honor.
