ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - Elizabethtown clinched its second straight Commonwealth Conference championship, winning 5-2 over Lebanon Valley in the fourth straight championship meeting between the two teams.
The Dutchmen end their season at 12-6, while the Blue Jays earn an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament at 11-5.
Tournament MVP Alena Marani picked up wins at No. 2 doubles and singles to lead Elizabethtown, and Madison Pipkin won 7-5, 7-6 (1) at No. 1 over
Shayna Heintzelman to clinch the fifth and final point.
The Blue Jays led 2-1 after doubles, with Heintzelman and
Christie Graf winning at No. 1 for LVC 8-4 over Pipkin and Kristi Noecker. E-town got its points from Marani and Allison Burkhardt at No. 2, beating
Tam Lobb and
Lauren Fulmer 8-4, and Kelly Fisher and Ashley Babula over
Morgan Brady and Jess Ferlenda at No. 3, 8-0.
Her doubles win capped off an incredible career for Heintzelman, who will graduate as LVC's all-time doubles wins leader at 49-25. She is also 61-24 in singles for a 110-49 combined career record.
In singles, Graf even the score at 2-2 with a quick 6-0, 6-1 win against Burkhardt at No. 3, but the Blue Jays countered with wins by Sarah Poulle at No. 6 over
Danielle Bordner, 6-1, 6-2, and Marani at No. 2 against Fulmer, 7-5, 6-3.
That brought it down to No. 1, and Pipkin won the second-set tiebreak to clinch the title.
Noecker led Lobb 6-4, 2-4 at No. 4 and Fisher was up 7-6 (4), 4-0 at No. 5 on
Morgan Brady in unfinished matches.
