CHESTER, Pa. - The Lebanon Valley volleyball team fought off four match points in the fourth set to force a fifth set and eventually a 3-2 win over Widener in Wednesday night's Commonwealth Conference semifinal matchup.
LVC will play at top-seeded Messiah, which beat Lycoming, Saturday at 7 p.m. The Dutchmen are going after their fourth straight Commonwealth Conference championship.
The Dutchmen took the first set, 26-24, behind
Kellsie Groff's team-best six kills. The team hit a match-high .412 in the set.
Widener took the next two sets. The match got ugly in the third set, when the Pride were able to win 25-11. The Dutchmen hit -.158 and made 12 total errors.
The match continued to look dismal into the fourth set. Down 24-20,
Jamie Hawk smashed the first of four kills she would make to help stymie the Pride. The Dutchmen rallied for six unanswered points for the set win.
The final set was no easier for the Dutchmen. Neither team led by more than two points at any point in the set. Hawk made the Dutchmen's final kill to give the team a 14-13 edge and a bad set by the Pride locked a win.
Hawk and Groff each finished with 20 kills. Hawk was especially impressive with a .340 hitting percentage.
Nicole Barra also reached double digits with 16 kills.
Kacey Musselman did a nice job managing the floor with 53 assists.
Angela Kuperavage led the back line with 32 digs. Five other women reached double digits: Musselman (14), Hawk (12),
Jess Finlayson (12), Groff (11) and
Sasha Birosik (11).
