Widener 71, Lebanon Valley 70
Box Score
CHESTER, Pa. - Widener's BJ Smith hit three three-pointers in the final minute - including the game-winning three-quarter court shot - to erase a Lebanon Valley lead and win 71-70.
It was déjà vu for Dutchmen fans as Smith beat LVC on a desperation shot for the second straight meeting - he canned a buzzer-beater three in Annville on Jan. 16, 2010 as Widener won that game 66-65.
Lebanon Valley (9-6, 1-4 CC) couldn't hold onto a 16-point second-half lead as the Pride (9-6, 4-1 CC) kept pace near the top of the conference standings.
Smith had hit an off-balance three with two seconds left to make it 70-68 LVC, then launched a three-quarter-court shot at the buzzer that found the bucket for the win.
Joe Meehan scored 27 points on 9-of-16 shooting to lead LVC.
Anthony Trautman added 20 points and
Danny Brooks had nine points and seven boards. For Widener, Smith and Jack Brennan had 16 points.
LVC had led by 16 off
Grant Becker's jumper with 14:49 left in the game, but the Pride went on a 16-4 run over the next nine minutes to tie the game on Brennan's fastbreak layup with 5:49 to go.
The Dutchmen recovered to go back up seven after a Trautman three and two Meehan free throws, but Smith sank a longball before Perry Wright made one of two free throws to cut the LVC lead to 67-64 with 25 seconds to go.
Both sides traded fouls, and after two Trautman free throws put LVC up 70-65 with nine seconds to go, Smith made a three-pointer with two ticks to go to cut it to 70-68. Out of a timeout, Meehan was intentionally fouled and missed both free throws. Jarrell Nelson grabbed the board and found Smith near the scorer's table, where he hit the shot from the other side of halfcourt.
LVC visits Messiah on Wednesday night.
