CORTLAND, N.Y. – Lebanon Valley volleyball recorded two wins in the championship pool of the SUNY Cortland Red Dragon Classic Saturday to earn the tournament title. The Dutchmen started the day with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 26-24) win over Rochester to reach the title match. LVC continued to dominate, recording a 3-0 (25-17 25-15 25-23) victory over SUNY Fredonia for its second-straight title at the tournament.

Emily Hopkins and junior
Nicole Barra were solid for the Dutchmen and named to the all-tournament team for their efforts.
LVC played a strong defensive game against Rochester early in the day, with junior
Angela Kuperavage leading the team with 13 digs. Senior
Emily Perkins and junior
Stephanie Derk posted seven digs each.
Perkins had 36 setting assists in the match, and Kuperavage tallied three service aces. The Dutchmen distributed well across the hitting front with senior
Michelle Little notching a team-high eight kills. Classmate
Joelle Snyder recorded seven kills, while Hopkins and Barra both had six.
In the championship match, LVC claimed the first two sets early against Fredonia before playing a nail biting last set for the win and title. The Dutchmen had a solid showing on offense with Little tallying 10 kills. Snyder and Hopkins added nine kills each, while Barra had seven and senior
Jess Raber scored four kills.
Steady play and good defense also helped LVC. Kuperavage posted a team-high 14 digs and Raber had 11 in the match. Freshman
Jess Finlayson claimed eight digs, while Little had seven. Perkins continued her stellar serving, recording 38 setting assists. The Dutchmen totaled seven serving aces with Raber leading the way with three, while Kuperavage and Perkins added two each.
Up front, Hopkins and Raber totaled two solo blocks, while Snyder and Barra both had one.
“The team was very inspiring today,” said head coach Wayne Perry. “We were energetic in the matches and improved from yesterday. Overall it was a good start to the season.”
The Dutchmen have participated in the SUNY Cortland Red Dragon Classic since 2002. Last season marked the first time LVC won the tournament title. LVC is 4-0 this season and has won all four matches in straight sets.
LVC hosts Moravian on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the LVC Gymnasium.
