Volleyball Defeats Widener In Straight Sets

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Lebanon Valley College defeated Widener 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-19) Wednesday evening at LVC Gymnasium to stay perfect in Commonwealth Conference play. The Dutchmen rallied late in the first two sets and came back from an early six point deficit in the final set to record the victory.

Senior Emily Hopkins led the Dutchmen with 12 kills and classmate Joelle Snyder added 11 in the match. Junior Jamie Hawk posted a team-high .556 hitting percentage, recording five kills on nine attempts. Freshman Megan Schoch was tough on the attack, tallying six kills on 11 attempts for a .364 hitting percentage. Senior Emily Perkins continued her strong setting with 34 assists in the match.

The attack posted six block assists including two from Hawk and Schoch. Junior Angela Kuperavage led the back line, claiming 16 digs, while senior Michelle Little and freshman Jess Finlayson added seven digs each.

Lebanon Valley recorded six service aces in the match, led by three from Little.

The Dutchmen jumped out to a 20-13 lead in the first match before Widener scored seven straight points to tie the score. The teams traded points and remained tied at 23 before an attack error by Widener set up match point and LVC claimed it with a service ace from Hawk.

In the second match, the teams tied the score at 14 and swapped points until LVC went ahead 24-22 off a kill by Snyder. An attack error by the Dutchmen set the score at 24-23 and with the match point on the line, Schoch came through with a kill.

Widener began the third set with a six point lead before LVC rattled off six straight to tie the score at eight aside. The Dutchmen stayed tough, claiming the 25-19 win off a kill by Snyder, assisted by Hopkins.

The win marked LVC's 26th straight home match won, dating back to the beginning of the 2008 season. So far the Dutchmen are 2-0 at home this season. The victory also improved LVC's regular season conference match win streak to seven games, dating back to September 30 last season.

LVC travels to the Franklin & Marshall Quad this weekend, opening play against the host Diplomats on Friday at 7 p.m. LVC continues play Saturday, facing Susquehanna at 11 a.m. and Marymount at 1:30 p.m.
