ANNVILLE, Pa. - A strong Wilkes University team was too much for Lebanon Valley College, snapping LVC's four-match win streak with an 8-1 non-conference win on Thursday.
The Colonels (13-4), who are regionally ranked #17, were too much for the Dutchmen (16-2) as LVC suffered just its second dual match loss of the season. For LVC, it was the final tune-up before next week's Commonwealth Conference team playoffs.
Freshman
Lauren Fulmer finished the regular season undefeated in dual-match play, picking up LVC's lone point by defeating MAC No. 4 champion Alexis Donner, 6-4, 6-0, to move to 18-0 in dual play.
In a rematch of the MAC Individual Tournament No. 1 Singles final from the fall, Wilkes' Melanie Nolt repeated her victory over LVC's
Sarah Grodzinski, 6-2, 6-4, dealing Grodzinski her first dual loss of the season after the senior won her first 17 matches.
Wilkes' Katie Lynn defeated
Shayna Heintzelman, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2, and Victoria Bybel beat
Tamera Lobb 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3. At No. 5, Bekah Shanaman topped
Caitlin Bedford 6-2, 6-0, and Michelle Knight won 6-0, 6-3 over
Morgan Brady at No. 6.
Wilkes swept doubles, with Nolt and Bybel coming back to win over Grodzinski and Heintzelman in a tiebreak at No. 1 9-8 (7-1). Lynn and Donner won 8-2 at No. 2 over Lobb and Fulmer, and Shanaman and Knight beat Brady and
Jess Ferlenda 8-4 at No. 3.
LVC begins its defense of the CC title next Tuesday, hosting Messiah in the playoff semifinals.
