CORTLAND, N.Y. - Freshman
Daniel Dempsey's hat trick wasn't enough to propel Lebanon Valley past Cortland State as the Dutchmen were edged 5-4 in non-league play Tuesday night.
LVC's special teams allowed four power-play goals to the Red Dragons (6-10), who outshot LVC 47-15. Freshman Daniel Rameriz made 42 saves in his career debut in net, and Dan Jewell needed just eight stops to pick up the win.
Dempsey, the game's #1 star, has four goals over the past two games as he and Wesley Landsem provided all of LVC's scoring. After falling in a 2-0 hole in the first on back-to-back power-play goals by Cortland's Corey John and Gerard Heinz, Dempsey converted from
Rory Wilkowich to cut the lead in half at the tail end of the period.
Cortland came out firing in the second, scoring twice in the opening 5:49 when Patrick Palmisano scored on the power play at 3:18 and again on Marcus Deberg's extra-man goal off a delayed penalty at 5:49.
But the Dutchmen didn't quit, and Dempsey tallied again three minutes later off assists from
William Brown and George Nicoles before Landsem hit at 15:04 thanks to
Anthony Longo and Matthew Conroy to once again make it a one-goal game.
The momentum was short-lived as
Timothy Bodenheimer was given a game misconduct for a hit from behind, leading to Jerrett Gold's power-play goal at 17:45 that would stand up as the game-winner.
Dempsey finished his impressive night with a short-handed tally from Wilkowich and
Colin Thompson 1:25 into the third, barging out of the penalty box to counter the end of a Cortland two-man advantage with a breakaway goal. But LVC managed only three more shots in the period as the equalizer never came. Rameriz stopped 13 in the period to hold Cortland scoreless and give his team a chance.
Cortland converted four of their 11 power-play opportunities and tacked on the delayed-penalty goal; LVC was 0-for-3 on the power play.
LVC returns home this weekend to host Brockport Friday and Saturday at Hersheypark Arena.
