ANNVILLE, Pa. - After earning the #1 seed in the playoffs for the first time, the Lebanon Valley College women's tennis team will aim to win its first-ever Commonwealth Conference championship this weekend.
The team championships will take place at the Hempfield Recreation Center in nearby Landisville. The Dutchmen (16-3, 5-0 CC) will take on fourth-seeded Arcadia (9-5, 2-3 CC) at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, after #2 Messiah (7-3, 4-1 CC) plays #3 Elizabethtown (9-3, 3-2 CC) at 9:30 a.m.
The championship match will take place Sunday at noon, with the winner receiving an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. LVC has advanced to the final once, last year, where they lost 5-0 to Elizabethtown. Lebanon Valley is making its fifth consecutive tournament appearance under head coach
Cliff Myers.
LVC dropped just two points during a perfect Commonwealth Conference schedule this season, with their closest result coming in a 7-2 win over Elizabethtown.
The Dutchmen have been led by the singles play of No. 1
Sarah Grodzinski (20-2) and No. 4
Sammy Burkey (20-1), who both set single-season program records for wins. Grodzinski became LVC's all-time winningest singles player with a 54-8 record earlier this spring, while Burkey has won 15 straight singles matches heading into this weekend.
LVC sports three MASCAC Individual Champions in Burkey,
Shayna Heintzelman (No. 5), and
Sara Wagner (No. 6), while Grodzinski and
Charissa Nordall (No. 3) were finalists. The No. 2 doubles team of
Kelly Moll and
Jan White and the No. 3 duo of Nordall and Wagner were also finalists.
