HERSHEY, Pa. - Lebanon Valley College put together arguably its best effort of 2009-10 on Saturday afternoon against Utica, but was unable to crack the win column after a third-period power play goal gave the Pioneers a 1-0 win.
In front of the program's alumni gathered for the annual Alumni Game, the Flying Dutchmen peppered 25 shots on Utica goalie Anthony Luckow, but the keeper turned them all away - including 12 in the second period.
In LVC's cage, freshman
Matthew Turner was nearly flawless himself, setting aside 41 of 42 Pioneer shots.
The only shot able to solve the rookie came off the stick of Vincent Nucci in the third period. He scored his first of the year on the power play at 9:49 of the final period. The Dutchmen had been on a 5-on-3 penalty kill and had just received one man back seven seconds before Nucci scored off assists from Tim Coffman and Josh Schmitt.
Prior to the goal, LVC had killed five penalties, including a five-minute major in the first period.
In the final minutes, pressing for the tying goal, the Flying Dutchmen drew a major penalty of its own as Robert Etts was sent off for checking from behind with 48 seconds to play. However, the final effort was unable to provide the equalizer.
The Dutchmen are off until they host defending national champions, Neumann, on Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. at Hershey Park.
