Volleyball Takes Two Five-Setters to End Regular Season

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -
With the top seed in the upcoming Commonwealth Conference playoffs secured on Wednesday with a 3-2 win over Elizabethtown, the Lebanon Valley College women's volleyball team had two nonconference matches on the docket on Saturday.

Rather than playing a pair of quiet, tune-up matches in preparation for the CC semifinal, the Dutchmen found themselves in two intense battles, as the matches against Moravian and York (Pa.) each went the distance. LVC was victorious in both five-setters, defeating Moravian, 3-2 (15-25, 25-22, 25-22, 23-25, 15-9), before downing York, 3-2 (25-21, 25-18, 24-26, 15-25, 15-10.)

"We are getting pretty good at five-set matches this year," head coach Wayne Perry said after the matches.

The Dutchmen are 6-0 in matches requiring five sets this year and have not lost a five-setter since 8/30/08 (8-0 since the 3-2 loss at SUNY-Cortland.)

In the opener against Moravian, Joelle Snyder keyed the offense with 17 kills. Jamie Hawk followed with 11 while Jess Raber (nine) and Nicole Barra (eight) made sure Moravian had to focus on multiple LVC options when on the attack. Emily Perkins was very busy at the setter position, dishing out 47 assists.

On defense, LVC was effective on the block as Hawk finished with six block assists. Snyder added five assisted blocks. Angela Kuperavage came up with 14 digs while Raber and Snyder each added nine. Kuperavage also had three aces.

The final regular season match against York came close to being a sweep for LVC as the Dutchmen won the first two sets. The third set was a nail biter, but York pulled out a 26-24 win before tying the match with a dominating 25-15 win of set four. LVC settled down and claimed the fifth set, 15-10, to make sure the regular season ended on a positive note.

Barra was the leader on the attack with 12 kills. Emily Hopkins contributed 11, followed by Hawk (10) and Snyder (9) as LVC had a well-balanced offense all afternoon.

Kuperavage dug out 22 offerings from York while Barra came up with 14 and Snyder and Stephanie Derkeach added nine.

Snyder served up three aces and Ally Stengel added two.

The Dutchmen end the regular season with a 29-2 record. They will host Widener in the Commonwealth Conference semifinals on Nov. 4 at 7 p.m.
