SELINSGROVE, Pa. - Lebanon Valley College engaged in perhaps its toughest match of the year at Susquehanna on Thursday night, with three of the four sets going into extra play. Unfortunately for the Dutchmen, they came out on the wrong side of the scoreboard, falling to SU, 3-1 (24-26, 25-27, 26-24, 25-21.)
"This was a tough loss," head coach Wayne Perry said. "Susquehanna served tough and we made some errors at key times."
The final scores of the first two sets indicate just how close the Dutchmen were to reversing the decision. However, faced with a two-set deficit, the Dutchmen rallied to win a dramatic third set to stay alive. The win in the third is even more impressive due to LVC's trailing by 10 points at one point in the frame.
"We were down by a lot in the third and really rallied together there," Perry said. "We almost did it in the fourth as well, but couldn't come all the way back."
Staring another big deficit down in the fourth set, LVC attempted to extend the match one more time, but Susquehanna was able to lock down the match in another close set.
Joelle Snyder led LVC's attack, finishing the match with 19 kills. Emily Hopkins was right behind her with 17 swings. Paige Yocum was a big asset off the bench, picking up five kills with no errors in the third and fourth sets.
Emily Perkins was busy at the net, handing out 48 assists.
On defense, in a match featuring as many points as this, it goes without saying that the back line will be busy. LVC had five players in double figures in digs - led by Angela Kuperavage's 23. Hannah Free had 12 digs while Jess Raber, Michelle Little and Perkins each finished with 10. Up front, Snyder and Perkins each assisted on three blocks.
The Dutchmen head to the nation's capitol this weekend for a pair of matches against Gallaudet and Scranton on Oct. 24.
