CHELTENHAM, Pa. - Lebanon Valley will get a chance to defend its Commonwealth Conference championship, clinching a spot in the CC playoffs with a 5-1 win over Arcadia Saturday.
The undefeated Dutchmen (11-0, 4-0 CC) played the Knights (8-6, 2-3 CC) to five points after the match was moved indoors due to the morning's rain.
LVC will return to the CC playoffs this spring for the sixth consecutive year. The Dutchmen won their first-ever title last year.
Sarah Grodzinski,
Shayna Heintzelman, and
Lauren Fulmer each pushed their 2009 singles records to 11-0 after winning their matches to secure the 5-1 win. LVC led 2-1 after doubles.
Grodzinski and Heintzelman beat Cory Mazen and Kate Wiseman, 8-3, at No. 1 doubles, and Fulmer and
Tamera Lobb topped Megan Gillespie and Beth Osipowitz 8-6 at No. 2. Arcadia pulled a point back when Irina Samson and Melissa DeBello defeated
Morgan Brady and
Caitlin Bedford, 8-5, at No. 3.
LVC took care of business in singles, with Grodzinski earning a quick 6-2, 6-0 win over Mazen at No. 1, Heintzelman beating Gillespie 6-4, 6-4, at No. 2, and Fulmer topping Osipowitz 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4.
Lobb, Brady, and Bedford all had to leave their matches unfinished, with Beford and Brady each up a set and Lobb leading Wiseman in the second set after dropping the first.
LVC will host Elizabethtown Oct. 20 in a big CC match.
