Volleyball Goes the Distance in Comeback Win at Frostburg St.

LVC vs. Bridgewater Box Score
LVC Vs. Frostburg State Box Score

FROSTBURG, Md. -
Faced with heightened adversity for the first time in the 2009 season, the Lebanon Valley College women's volleyball team banded together with a solid team effort to stave off a forceful Frostburg State squad in a thrilling five-set match. After dropping the first set, LVC won the next two but couldn't put FSU away. In the fifth and deciding set, Frostburg had a sizeable, 13-10 lead late and appeared close to the win, but the Dutchmen stormed back with six of the final seven points of the match for the 3-2 (25-27, 25-21, 25-18, 19-25, 16-14) win at the Frostburg Quad.

"It was absolutely an incredible match," head coach Wayne Perry said. "Both teams were out there slugging it out with each other."

On the LVC side, the tremendous depth on the front line was extremely evident. Five different players had at least nine kills. Joelle Snyder led the way with 16. Emily Hopkins had 14. Jess Raber added 13 kills while Michelle Little scored 11 and Jamie Hawk came through with nine.

Raber also served up three aces while Emily Perkins added a pair.

In a match with so much offense, the Dutchmen were also sound on the defensive side as well. Angela Kuperavage tied a LVC record for digs in a match with 33. She tied Katie Feree who had 33 against Lycoming in 2003. Little also played an important role on defense with 18 digs. Hannah Free and Perkins each had 10. The attackers were able to move into position easily for the Dutchmen because they knew whichever defensive player was back digging was capable of starting the play well.

The long back-and-forth match was the second of the day for LVC after the Dutchmen opened the day with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-13) win over Bridgewater (Va.)

Hopkins was the leader on offense for LVC in the opener, hammering home 15 kills. Raber added six kills on 10 attempts with zero errors.

Angela Kuperavage finished with 20 digs to Raber's 16.

In the serving game, LVC again scored points with three aces from Raber and two from Snyder.

Perkins and Hopkins were named to the all-tournament team at the end of the quad meet.

The Dutchmen are now 22-1 in 2009. They are back on the court Oct. 14 at Messiah at 7 p.m.
