LANDISVILLE, Pa. - The Lebanon Valley College women's tennis team fell in the Commonwealth Conference final Sunday, dropping a 5-0 decision to Elizabethtown College at the Hempfield Courts.
The Dutchmen (18-4) end a record-breaking season that saw them break the program record for wins. The Blue Jays earn the CC's automatic berth to the NCAA championships.
Doubles play was held outdoors, but an early-afternoon rainstorm forced the conclusion of singles indoors.
E-town won handily at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles, and the team of Emily Swarr and Jessica Russell came back to defeat Jan White and Leslie Sabas at No. 2, 8-6.
Things looked brighter in singles, and the Dutchmen led at Nos. 1, 2 and 5, but Alice Yu, the tournament MVP, beat Kelly Moll 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3, and Minke Albers clinched the crown with a win at No. 4 over Sammy Burkey, 6-3, 6-4.
Unfinished matches included No. 2 singles, where Sabas was only a point away from beat Emma Smith with the match at 6-3, 5-3. Sabas leaves LVC as the program's all-time singles wins leader with a 50-33 career record, mostly at No. 1 and 2 singles. She also broke the single-season wins record this year with a brilliant 19-2 record.
Sarah Grodzinski was battling Swarr at No. 1, and won the first set 6-3 and was down 5-2 in the second when the match concluded. Charissa Nordall was also up a set on Russell at No. 5.
