Dutchmen Win Four Titles at King’s Invitational

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley women's tennis team had an excellent Sunday as the Dutchmen won four flights at the King's Invitational. The Dutchmen won three singles flights at numbers four, five, and seven while adding a doubles title at number two. Play was split between the 10 King's courts in Kirby Park and the six Wilkes courts right next door in the Ralston Athletic Complex.
 
Erika Badner went 6-0 on the day and won two titles as she won the number four singles flight and the number two doubles flight with Nikki Denbowski. Badner started out the day in singles play with an 8-3 victory over Eastern. The sophomore reached the final with a three-set 6-3, 4-6, 10-6 victory over Rutgers-Camden in the semifinals. In the final, Badner won in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 to earn her first title of the day. In doubles play, Badner and Denbowski started things off with a 6-2 victory over Rutgers-Camden. They then cruised to a 6-1 victory over Scranton in the semifinals before taking down Misericordia 6-2 in the final.
 
Katie Berra won the number five singles flight with three victories. Her first match of the day was an 8-2 victory over Wilkes. She needed three sets in the semifinals but advanced to the final with a 6-1, 1-6, 10-8 victory over Rutgers-Camden. In the final, the sophomore won in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 over Scranton.
 
Emily Bryant won LVC's third individual title at number seven singles with three convincing wins. She started the day with an 8-1 victory over Misericordia. The sophomore won 6-3, 6-1 over Rutgers-Camden in the semifinals. She finished the day with a 6-2, 6-1 victory in the final over Wilkes.
 
Sarah McComas finished second at number two singles and went 3-2 on the day between singles and doubles. The senior began with an 8-3 victory over Rutgers-Camden in singles play. She then advanced to the final with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Wilkes in the semifinals. In the final, she battled to a 6-3, 6-0 defeat to Scranton. McComas teamed with Catherine Stone at number one doubles where the duo went 1-1. They defeated Misericordia 6-4 before dropping a 7-5 decision to Scranton in the semifinals. Stone went 1-1 at number one singles as she began the day with a quick 8-0 victory over King's. The junior then dropped a hard-fought 6-1, 6-1 decision in the semifinal to the eventual champion from Wilkes.
 
Megan Martin went 1-1 at number three singles. The junior won her first match of the day 8-1 over Misericordia. She fell in the semifinals 6-4, 6-1 to the eventual champion from Scranton. At number six singles, Laken Kelly dropped an 8-4 decision to the eventual champion from Rutgers-Camden.
 
The team of Gigi Guay and Zowie Zokuskie went 1-1 at number three doubles. They earned a close 7-6 victory in their first match before falling 6-0 to eventual champion Rutgers-Camden in the semifinals. First-years Julia Rohrer and Ella Stauffer fell to the eventual champions from Scranton 6-4 at number four doubles in their first collegiate match.

The Dutchmen will play the first dual match of the season on Wednesday, Sept. 17 with a road trip to Gettysburg College. First serves are scheduled for 4 p.m. in Gettysburg.
