MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Lebanon Valley junior thrower
Ian Paul finished 13th in the javelin to earn Second Team All-America honors on Thursday at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Paul becomes the fifth javelin thrower in program history to earn All-America honors and the first since Tony Bernarduci in 1998. He is the 10th overall All-American in program history and first since Owen Buhr finished third in the 400-meter hurdles two years ago.
The junior had a mark of 59.13 meters (194'0") on his second of three attempts. Paul threw seventh in the second of two flights. On his first throw he hit 58.52 meters (192'0") to move into 10th place. His throw was the sixth-best first throw in the field and he was 11th going into the second round of throws during his flight. Paul dropped the 12th by the time he took his second turn and delivered his best mark of the day at 59.13 meters (194'0") to move back up to 11th. He was still 11th overall when he had his third attempt. The junior fouled on his third throw as he needed four more feet to qualify for the finals. Two throwers had better marks than him on their final throws to move Paul down to a 13th place finish.
Whitworth sophomore Cody Wheeler won the event with a toss of 65.81 meters (215'11") on his first attempt. Ohio Wesleyan junior Trey Theobald was second with a mark of 65.07 meters (213'6") on his first throw during the first flight. Rowan's Damitrius Hester was third with a throw of 65.00 meters (213'3") on his third attempt.
Paul's mark is the fifth-best of his career. All five of his top throws have come this season. He is the second consecutive LVC thrower to compete at the National Championships in the javelin after
Michael De Falcis finished 20th last year.
