How It Happened
ANNVILLE, Pa. – Widener shot lights out from beyond the arc in the first half and went on to defeat Lebanon Valley 86-60 on Wednesday evening in MAC Commonwealth men's basketball action. The Dutchmen slipped to 6-14, 3-8 MAC Commonwealth and the Pride jumped to 11-9, 8-4 MAC Commonwealth.
It seemed as though the visitors couldn't miss in the opening half of action, especially from 3-point land. Widener jumped out to a quick 18-4 lead after Jared Peters knocked down a trey for the Pride with 13:17 remaining.
Jeremy Deihm stopped the bleeding momentarily with a 3-point play the unconventional way, as he was fouled in the process of making a layup and hit the free throw to make it 18-7. Widener had the answer, though, as Peters hit a layup, followed by back-to-back triples from Elijah Boyd and Peters to put the away team out in front 26-7.
From there, Widener continued to pour it on and later, Boyd and Luke Patel hit two consecutive triples to make it a 34-9 contest. After
Zach Tucker made a free throw, Boyd sank back-to-back treys yet again, followed by another one from Peters. In the first half alone, the Pride went 10-of-16 from beyond the arc and took a commanding 53-25 advantage into the second half.
In the second half, unfortunately the damage had already been done and LVC was in a hole it was unable to climb out of. Midway through the second, the Flying Dutchmen showed signs of life after
Mason Green sank back-to-back triples to make it 70-48 in favor of Widener, but the Pride were able to eventually hold on for the 86-60 win.
