How It Happened
Lebanon Valley ended a recent three-game skid with a 3-2 victory over St. Lawrence on day one of the annual William Smith Classic in Geneva, N.Y. on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 16.
The Flying Dutchmen (3-3) used an aggressive attack to earn 12 penalty corners on the day and converted three of those opportunities into points.
The first came in the 20th minute when
Cecile Kat put her shot past St. Lawrence goalkeeper Sarah Cardenali and into the back of the cage off an assist from
Jenna Lysakowski. The freshman's fifth goal of the season proved to be the only scoring to speak of in the first half.
After 20 scoreless minutes to begin the second half, Casey Combroski finally broke the drought when she connected for her first marker of the year following another penalty corner opportunity for LVC, this one coming in the 56th minute.
Rachel Gorman added the helper.
The Saints (2-3) cut the deficit in half less than three minutes later when Lucy Stillman converted her attempt off a Bailey Sherwin find with 10:48 left to play but Dombroski answered back just two minutes later. Her second tally of the afternoon again came following a penalty corner, with Lysakowski notching her second assist of the game.
It didn't take long for St. Lawrence to respond, as Melissa Grosshans kept her team alive with a score off a Jackie Reiss cross with 7:31 left to play but the Dutchmen defense clamped down and allowed just one Saints' shot attempt the rest of the way to secure the victory.
Standouts
Casey Dombroski,
Jenna Lysakowski – It was a good day for Dombroski who put five of her six shots on target and netted her first goal of the season in the victory. Her second marker proved to be the game-winner. Lysakowski got the start and made her impact felt as she provided a pair of assists during penalty corners in both the first and second halves.
