Erica Wise set two program records and Lebanon Valley's men's and women's swimming teams picked up their first victories of the season on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 31. LVC's women beat Wilkes 111-80 and the men bested the Colonels 126-62.
Wise was stellar in her first collegiate home meet, setting school records in the 50m free and 100m free. The freshman swam the 50m free in 27.28, topping the previous record by over a full second. She followed it up with a record-breaking 1:01.39 in the 100m free, .54 seconds faster than the program's previous best.
Kyra Valent added a pair of solo victories in the 800m free (10:51.07) and 400m free (5:19.48), as did
Alayna Kalinay in the 200m free (2:27.77) and the 100m backstroke (1:14.43), besting Wilkes' Amanda Lopez by .05 in an exciting race.
Madison Martin picked up a victory in the 200m IM with a time of 2:52.29 and
Leslie Hiller was victorious in the 100m fly, touching in 1:17.51. The team of Hiller, Kalinay, Valent, and Wise capped the women's competition with a sub-10 minute (9:55.51) 800m free relay performance.
On the men's side,
Ian Lloyd was strong in his solo outings, winning a pair of races. The sophomore was victorious in the 200m IM thanks to his time of 2:19.19. He also came away with a 100m backstroke win thanks to his 1:03.40 performance.
The men started off strong when
Bryce Betz,
Bobby Burkhart,
Brandon Seigel, and
Blade Umstead won the 200m medley relay, combining for a time of 1:58.56.
Chris Kurtz followed it up with a win in the 800m free, touching in 9:40.47, before picking up his second win of the day in the 100m free with a sub-minute effort (56.67).
Burkhart didn't need the points in the 100m breaststroke (1:11.66) but he was just half a second off the program record.
Seigel was victorious 200m free with a time of 2:15.47 and
Clay Heebner added wins in the 100m fly (1:03.86) and 400m free (4:42.75). The team of Lloyd, Heebner, Umstead, and Kurtz capped the meet by swimming a 8:53.60.
Saturday's home-opener was also LVC's annual Pink Meet. The Flying Dutchmen wore pink caps, collected donations, and offered a bake sale to raise awareness and funds, joining the fight against breast cancer.
After swimming three times in nine days to begin the season, the Dutchmen have the week off before getting back in the pool at Cabrini next Saturday morning.
