Houston Chronicle profile HOUSTON, Tex. - Former Lebanon Valley College all-American Mike Rhoades '95 has been named the head coach at Rice University, his first NCAA Division I head coaching position
Rhoades heads to Rice after serving as associate head coach at Virginia Commonwealth under Shaka Smart, where had been since 2009-10. That stint included VCU's 2011 Final Four appearance. He had previously been the head coach at Division III Randolph-Macon, where he won six ODAC titles and was ranked #1 twice.
At LVC, Rhoades led the Dutchmen to the 1994 national title, was the 1995 D-III National Player of the Year, a two-time all-American, and was LVC's all-time scoring leader at graduation with 2,050 points. He remains LVC's career assists (668), steals (212), and free throws (84.5%) leader. A native of Mahanoy, Rhoades graduated with a degree in history.
Rhoades is one of a number of Dutchmen in the coaching ranks, and one of three in Division I; Chris Kreider '03 is an assistant coach at George Mason, and J.D. Byers '05 is an assistant at Radford.
