Stevenson 89, Lebanon Valley 73
ANNVILLE, Pa. - Stevenson clinched the Commonwealth Conference's top playoff seed with an 89-73 win over Lebanon Valley in the season finale on Saturday.
Junior
Kevin Agnew matched his career high with 37 points, making his case for CC Player of the Year as he won the league scoring title at 26.4 points per game. On their senior day,
Joey Giangiobbe and
Mike Fasano both turned in inspired games, with Giangiobbe dropping in nine points and 11 rebounds and Fasano connecting for five points, two boards, and a block.
Both Fasano and Giangiobbe and their families were honored before the game for their contributions to LVC basketball as they played their final game for the Valley.
The Dutchmen (9-16, 7-11 CC) couldn't pull back from an early second-half deficit as the Mustangs (18-7, 13-5 CC), motivated by the prospect of overtaking Messiah for the conference's top seed, hit an 11-2 run after halftime to take an insurmountable lead.
Six Mustangs scored in double digits, led by Stefon McCray's 16 and Alfonzo Hawkins' 15. Stevenson shot an even 50 percent from the floor to LVC's 39.7 percent, although LVC won the rebounding battle 42-37.
The game had an entertaining opening 15 minutes as the two sides dueled back and forth, but Stevenson put some air in it with a Darius Walker three-pointer and Erik Fisher layup to lead 39-31 just before the break, and Christian Roberts' buzzerbeater three made it 47-38 at halftime.
Stevenson opened the second half with an 11-2 run, stopped by a rainbow three from
Travis Conrad, but LVC would not pull the lead to single digits the rest of the way. Conrad and Agnew buckets started to give LVC some momentum, but McCray, Kelly Davis, and Colby Giacubeno combined for a 7-0 sput to solidify SU's lead in the closing minutes.
Agnew's season average of 26.4 points represents the second-best scoring average in LVC history and the best season in 62 years, trailing only Al Murawski's long-standing average of 26.8 points per game from 1951-52. The junior finished with 659 points and 973 for his career.
