WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley women's basketball team clinched a spot in the Commonwealth Conference Tournament despite a 56-54 loss to Lycoming on Wednesday evening.
With help from other teams across the league, the Valley will participate in its seventh straight CC postseason tournament this season. The loss slides them to 17-5 on the year overall and 10-4 in conference play.
LVC led for the majority of the game on Wednesday, until a 17-5 run in the latter half of the second stanza brought the Warriors all the way back for the comeback victory. Lycoming's Julia Antonelli sunk two free throws with 13 seconds to play and senior
Lauren Ruhl's layup would not fall as the game came to a close.
Senior
Caitlin Bach led all scorers with 16 points on the night, while junior
Kiely Chaklos and sophomore
Peyton Carper joined her in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Bach was also efficient on the glass with eight boards, but Lycoming held a 32-31 edge in the game in rebounds.
After a stalemate first half that ended in a 27-27 tie, the Valley came out inspired in the second, taking a 12-point lead, their largest of the game, at the 7:45 mark on a Chaklos jumper. However, it all fell apart for the Dutchmen from that point forward as the Warriors stormed back, tying the game with 13 seconds to play, and winning it in the waning moments.
Although LVC suffered the loss on Wednesday, Saturday's battle with Messiah is still very meaningful. A Dutchmen win would move the Valley into a share of the top spot in the conference standings.
Tipoff from LVC Gymnasium is set for 4 p.m.
