LVC Drops Hood, Moves Into Playoff Contention

Box Score Men's Basketball
Lebanon Valley 69, Hood 63

FREDERICK, Md. - Kevin Agnew dropped in 32 points and Joey Giangiobbe had a double-double to lead Lebanon Valley in a gutsy win at Hood, 69-63, to keep them in the postseason conversation.

The Dutchmen (9-12, 7-7) move into a tie for the fifth and final Commonwealth Conference tournament slot with Albright, but hold the tiebreak over the Lions via a head-to-head season sweep. That means the Valley, with four games left, controls its own destiny in the postseason race.

LVC avenged a comeback loss to the Blazers (15-6, 9-5 CC) from earlier this season, coming back in the final minutes after digging out of a first-half hole and ending up on top after a see-saw second half.

Agnew went over 30 points for the seventh time this season, draining five three-pointers and going 13-for-16 at the line. Giangiobbe turned in his third double-double of the season with 17 points and 13 rebounds, and Mike Fasano had 10 points including a key three-pointer with 1:56 remaining to give LVC the lead for good.

Cameron Cook led Hood with 20 and Justin Bowens had 11, but the Blazers were held to 34.9 percent shooting and went just 5-for-30 for three.

After falling behind by double digits in the first half and trailing 30-23 at the break, LVC busted a shooting slump as Agnew scored the first six points of the second half to spark a 9-0 run that saw LVC take its first lead at 32-30. The lead ballooned to as much as seven after Giangiobbe made a pair of free throws at the 13:03 mark, but Chris and Cameron Cook combined for five straight points minutes later to cut LVC's lead to a point and set up a duel over the final quarter.

LVC and Hood went back and forth with five ties and as many lead changes in an eight-minute span until Fasano swished a three-pointer out of a timeout with 1:56 left, putting the visitors up 60-57. Cameron Cook and Giangiobbe traded free throws, and Agnew made it 64-59 with 20 seconds left after a missed Hood shot. Agnew and Fasano combined to go 5-for-6 at the line in the final 13 seconds to ice the game.

The Dutchmen will turn around and head to Lycoming Wednesday night before returning home to face first-place Messiah on Hot Dog Frank Day Saturday.
