Hood 62, Lebanon Valley 61
ANNVILLE, Pa. - A pair of last-second free throws by Cameron Cook sank Lebanon Valley as the visitors came back to win, 62-61, in Commonwealth Conference play.
The Dutchmen (5-10, 3-6 CC) were held scoreless over the final 3:48 of the game as the Blazers (12-4, 6-3 CC) won for the ninth time in 10 outings with four free throws in the final two minutes, including Cook's clinchers with four seconds left.
Luke Berguson recorded his first career double-double for the Valley with 16 points and 12 rebounds, and
Kevin Agnew poured in 24 points, including six three-pointers. Cook led Hood with 23 points.
LVC recorded a season-high five blocks, including three by
Joey Giangiobbe, but were hurt by 15 turnovers and 39.2 percent shooting despite canning 10 three-pointers. Hood was no better from the field, shooting 34.4 percent and 9-for-30 for three as both teams went 11-for-15 at the line.
Hood led most of the first half until an 8-2 run late in the first, keyed by Berguson free throws around an Agnew trey, tied the game at 21. Berguson's tip-in later in the half gave LVC a 31-28 halftime lead.
A 7-0 run early in the second would give the Dutchmen their largest lead of the game at 43-35, but a 10-3 spurt by Hood made it a one-point game that would stay tight down the stretch.
In a tight game that featured seven ties and eight lead changes, it came down to defense in the final minutes as Hood made the most of their chances. After Berguson made one of two free throws with 3:48 left, neither team scored again until Justin Bowens hit a pair with 1:55 remaining to cut LVC's lead from three to 61-60. Both teams traded misses, and a turnover by Agnew with 20 seconds left denied LVC a chance to cement their lead.
Off the turnover, Hood called timeout three times under heavy pressure by the Dutchmen, who eventually forced Matt Galloway into an off-balance three-pointer that missed. The board fell to Cook, however, who was fouled by Giangiobbe and made both of his free throws with 4.1 ticks remaining. Agnew's last-second heave to win it was off the mark.
LVC will visit Alvernia on Saturday.
