Lebanon Valley 1, St. Joseph's College (L.I.) 0

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Freshman Ian McGinnis of the Lebanon Valley men's soccer team stuck a shot in behind the opposing goalkeeper in the 37th minute of the first half and the Dutchmen held on for a season-opening victory, 1-0, over St. Joseph's College (L.I.) on Friday evening at Herbert Field.

The first chance from either side came from St. Joseph's when Gaetano Innamorato got in on goal and sent a shot off the fingertips of LVC senior goalkeeper James Clements. The rebound came back to Innamorato who struck a grounder toward the corner of the net behind Clements, but senior Jim Fisher came across the back side and sent the ball out of harm's way.

Following multiple chances from either side, McGinnis' substitution at the 34:39 mark provided a needed spark for the Valley. A corner kick from reigning Commonwealth Conference Rookie of the Year sophomore Cam Alexander led to two blocked shots on goal before the ball was finally corralled by senior Garth Stefan, who sent it across the front of the goal where McGinnis was there to finish it behind St. Joseph's goalkeeper Avery Gomez.

Tough defense and solid goaltending were the story of the second half as LVC held the shot edge, 20-8, and the advantage in corners, 11-5, in the contest. Alexander recorded five shots with two on goal to lead the side, while junior Kyle Fronk posted four shots with one on net.

For St. Joseph's, Innamorato and Fabio Alves notched two shots apiece with Alves putting both on goal. Frank Siffert, Chris Hall, Daniel Sorrano, and Dylan Ierardi also recorded a shot each.

Gomez made six saves on 20 LVC shots, while Clements tallied four saves on eight shots from the Golden Eagles.

The Dutchmen are back in action tomorrow afternoon as part of a doubleheader at Herbert Field. The women's side kicks off its 2013 season against York (Pa.) at 12 p.m., while the men continue their opening weekend against Centenary (N.J.) at 3 p.m.
