Lebanon Valley 81, Messiah 72
GRANTHAM, Pa. - Big performances by
Danny Brooks and
Kevin Agnew led a late charge as Lebanon Valley came back from 13 down in the second half to stun Messiah, 81-72.
The Dutchmen (9-14, 6-10 CC) used a 22-point swing in the second half to keep its slim playoff hopes alive, although it would need to win out and get significant help in the final week of the regular season. The victory was also #299 in the career of head coach
Brad McAlester, setting him up to try for his 300th Tuesday night in the home finale against Arcadia.
Kevin Agnew drained 28 points, including a perfect 12-for-12 night at the line, to go with six rebounds and five assists, while
Danny Brooks scored 25 with an uncharacteristic 4-for-5 shooting night from beyond the arc, including back-to-back bombs to take the lead with 2:30 remaining.
Messiah had three in double digits led by Brad Bolen's 19 and Zac Hoy's 18, but the Falcons couldn't stop a hot offensive night by LVC, which shot 56.8% overall, including 8-for-13 beyond the arc and 23-for-29 at the line.
The Falcons led the entire first half and well into the second, going up as much as 13 off a Tyler Groff three-pointer with 14:51 remaining. The visitors slowly chipped away at the lead, however, and finally tied the game at 62-62 thanks to a 7-0 run sparked by Sam Diaz off the bench and an Agnew three-pointer with 5:21 left.
Derek Mosley canned his own three to retake the lead, but Brooks went back-to-back from the outside around a Hoy layup to take LVC's first lead of the game with 2:30 to go, and a pair of free throws and a subsequent layup by Agnew at the 1:15 mark put the Valley up two possessions.
Hoy and Diaz traded free throws immediately after that, but LVC made its free throws as it outscored Messiah 8-3 in the final minute to secure the comeback win.
