Valley Sweeps Season Series From Lycoming, 84-75

Box Score Men's Basketball
Lebanon Valley 84, Lycoming 75

ANNVILLE, Pa. - Contributions from all over the floor lifted Lebanon Valley to an emotional, hard-fought win over Lycoming, 84-75, to sweep the season series from the Warriors.

The Dutchmen (8-14, 5-10 CC) were sparked by the return of point guard Kevin Agnew as they snapped their six-game skid with the win over third-place Lycoming (14-8, 8-7 CC).

LVC received big performances from unexpected places: a career-high eight assists to match 14 rebounds by Joey Giangiobbe, four three-pointers - all in key spots - by Garrett Kelly off the bench, and eight boards to go with 12 points by Matt O'Brien as LVC won the rebounding battle by a wide 47-32 advantage.

But the expected sources stepped as well, led by Danny Brooks' 19 points and nine rebounds, and a superb return by Agnew with a team-high 21 points, including an 11-for-12 night at the stripe. Lycoming received 21 points from Anthony Martin and 15 from William Wingate as Jerald Williams dished 11 assists with five steals.

The Dutchmen were playing with heavy hearts and without teammate Luke Berguson following the passing of his mother, Margaret, earlier this week; they responded with a dominating start to the second half to take control of a close game. After preventing Lycoming from getting to far ahead in the first half after the Warriors went up 31-21, LVC came roaring out of the break with the half's first 10 points in just 1:28, started and ended by three-pointers by Agnew and O'Brien.

Lycoming responded to pull the score to 65-61 before a Kelly three set off a 7-0 spurt, but Lyco equaled that to draw within a possession before Brooks made a key layup with 4:35 to go. After a pair of Martin free throws, O'Brien made an exceptional play, taking the rebound of his own blocked shot and banking it high off the glass to go up 77-72 at the 1:23 mark, and Agnew made three free throws inside the final minute to all but ice the game at 80-72. LVC held Lycoming without a field goal over a 4:10 span in the closing minutes until Rob Pillow made an ultimately meaningless three-pointer with 35 seconds left.

LVC shot 57.1% after the break and 47.3% overall, including a season-best 7-for-13 for three and 25-for-32 at the line. The Dutchmen overcame a 19-8 turnover disadvantage thanks to their rebounding, and they kept Lyco off the line - the Warriors made just 10 of their 15 tries.

The Valley visits Messiah Saturday night.
