ANNVILLE, Pa. - Four newcomers had a point and
Andy Suprock scored a superb first-half double as Lebanon Valley romped to a 5-0 opening-day win over Penn State Harrisburg Friday at Herbert Field.
The Dutchmen (1-0) dominated from the opening whistle when
Jordann Ferguson scored just 2:03 into the game, and LVC held a 19-5 shots advantage overall.
Suprock came off the bench to score twice less than a minute apart, and
Stephen Simonian and
Curtis Washburn added second-half strikes.
Any questions of how coach
Charlie Grimes' 13-member incoming class would mesh in the lineup were quickly put to rest when Ferguson headed
Jake Herron's cross just under the bar in the third minute, setting up a dream beginning to LVC's season. Suprock extended the lead to 2-0 with a brilliant solo run in the 38th minute, then hit again on
Cam Alexander's pass just 42 seconds later to make it 3-0 at halftime.
Simonian slotted home
Kevin Doty's cross on the hour, and Washburn saved the best for last, floating a 35-yard outswinging effort to score in his collegiate debut.
Brian Frasca (2 saves, 66:22) and
Matt Blanke (1 save, 23:38) combined for the shutout. Charles Hyson took the loss with two first-half stops for the Lions; Devin Gerhart also had two saves in the second half. LVC led 4-1 on corners.
The Dutchmen turn around quickly to host Grove City Saturday at 4 p.m.
