COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - Led by the men's distance medley relay smashing a school record that had stood since 1987, Lebanon Valley dropped big results in their return to action at the Collegeville Indoor Classic at Ursinus College on Friday.
The men finished tied for second out of 16 schools with 67 points, while the women were eighth of 16 with 34 points. The Dutchmen racked up three event wins overall with four ECAC Championships qualifications and five new school records.
The men's DMR of
Michael Harnish, De'von Moore,
Eliott Bonds, and
Andrew Goelz broke the school record and qualified for ECACs with a third-place 10:31.13, blowing past the previous LVC mark of 10:46.24 that had stood since 1987. Their time was the fifth-fastest in NCAA Division III so far this year.
Highlighting the sprint events,
Jerome Duncan won the 60-meter hurdles and qualified for ECAC championships in the process, running a school-record 8.44 for the nation's 12th-fastest time of the season.
Darryl Sweeper also scored points in the hurdles with a sixth-place 8.99, and
Parris Knox had a ninth-place 9.13 finish. LVC's top 4x200 relay (
Brendan Kain,
Wes Rockwell,
Mike Pugh, Duncan) had a fourth-place 1:35.56.
The distance runners also shined individually as Harnish continued his terrific start to the season with a win in the 42-runner 800-meter field, running 2:01.0 just ahead of Goelz in a fifth-place 2:04.07.
Nick D'Angelo was sixth in the 3,000 in 9:12.65, nearly 26 seconds under his previous indoor best.
In field events,
Mike Weir had a five-inch personal best in the pole vault, finishing second after clearing 13-9.25.
Erik Brandt and
Caleb Wiley each scored points in both the long and triple jumps; Brandt had a fifth-place 20-1.5 in the long and fourth-place 39-7.25 int he triple, while Wiley was sixth in the long at 19-9 and third in the triple at 39-11.5.
On the women's side, the 4x200 relay smashed the school record by more than a second, winning in an ECAC-qualifying 1:46.66 behind
Kristin Fitti-Hafer,
Alisha Farrell,
Ines Antensteiner, and
Johanna Walker. The 4x400 (Kathryn O'Hara,
Jamielyn Samper,
Tori Stramara, Farrell) also turned in a fifth-place 4:17.02, good for third all-time at LVC.
Walker set a pair of new program records with a sixth-place 8.18 in the 60-meter dash, lowering her own record by a hundreth of a second. She also ran an ECAC-qualifying 9.27 in the 60 hurdles for fourth place.
Kristin Fitti-Hafer ran a personal-best 27.39 in the 200-meter dash for fifth, and also had a ninth-place 8.24 in the 60-meter dash and ninth-place 9.72 in the 60 hurdles.
In the field events, LVC had a trio of top-10 finishes by freshmen.
Tori Stramara placed fifth in the triple jump at 31-8.75 feet, while
Annese Mauer was 10th in the long jump at 14-4.5.
Mariah Smolka improved her personal best in the shot put by more than a foot with an eighth-place 34-11.25.
LVC will host its annual indoor meet next Saturday, Jan. 28 at the Arnold Sports Center.
