Danny Brooks' 18-point, 14-rebound double-double wasn't enough for Lebanon Valley to overcome a hot-shooting York team as the Dutchmen fell 81-62 in the season opener Tuesday night.
The Spartans (1-0) shot 56 percent from the floor with four players in double digits. LVC (0-1) was led by Brooks and
Joe Meehan's 16 points.
Matt O'Brien pitched in with seven points off the bench.
Paul Kouvaris led York with 23 points, and Julian Watson scored 13 of his 17 points in the second half to help the Spartans pull away.
York hit an early 6-0 run to take control of the game, then held LVC scoreless over a 3:38 span late in the first half as part of a 9-0 run to blow their lead to double digits, on the way to a 42-31 halftime advantage.
The Spartans went up as much as 17 early in the second half, but LVC chipped away, and a four-point play by Sam Diaz midway through the half cut the lead to 62-53. However, York answered back with a 6-0 run that included four Kouvaris foul shots, and LVC couldn't respond as the Spartans won going away at 81-62.
LVC will open the Rinso Marquette Tournament this Saturday, hosting Gallaudet at 8 p.m.
