Preview: Swimming Opens 2011-12 Tuesday Night

ANNVILLE, Pa. - The Lebanon Valley College men's and women's swim teams will plunge head-first into the 2011-12 season on Tuesday, when both will visit Albright College at 6 p.m.

Both teams will open at home on Friday night, taking on Arcadia in the program's first annual Pink Meet at 6 p.m. All proceeds will benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

With a solid 6-6 season in 2010-11, the LVC men will look to tip the scale and break above .500 this season. The women concluded the season with a winning record, going 7-6; with a wave of talented freshman additions on both squads, the Dutchmen should have no trouble going even higher in 2011-12.

The women, led by captain Carly Wilfong, will return with several swimmers that set new school records last year in their respective events. Freshmen Julia Mongeau and Alicia Hain broke 10 individual records between them last year, with Mongeau starring in the IM and breaststroke events and Hain standing out at distance freestyle. Kris Roaten returns as the program's 1,000-yard freestyle recordholder, and Noelle Brossman, Mary Gardner, Kerri Bailey, and Kristen Zartman were all members of record-setting relays last season.

With a large 33-swimmer roster that includes 10 freshmen, the women will be led by a three-member senior class with captain Wilfong (free, breaststroke), Alyson Reitmeyer (free), and Kelsey Sherman (free). The women bring back 12 of 14 MAC Championship qualifiers from last season, and each qualified in multiple events.

On the men's side, captain Ryan Humphries will direct the team, while returning MAC qualifiers Eliott Bonds, Joseph Chubb, Matt Dwyer, Erik Brandt (along with Humphries, a triple-qualifier) will all look to propel the team forward with the addition of a five-member freshman class.

Other returners for coach Mary Gardner include Joseph Chubb (free, back), Bobby Duck (free), Chris Kanezo (breaststroke), Shane Miller (free), and senior Willie Rodriguez (free); upperclassmen Austen Hellerick, Collin Straka, and Gabriel Lincoln-DeCusatis will be first-year members of the team.
