LANCASTER, Pa. - Elizabethtown College won the Commonwealth Conference women's tennis team title Saturday with a 5-0 win over Lebanon Valley College at the Racquet Club West in Lancaster.
Meeting for the title for the third straight year, the Blue Jays won the rubber match in convincing fashion as they earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. LVC was the defending champion; Elizabethtown won in 2008.
Playing indoors in Lancaster due to morning rain and afternoon winds, Elizabethtown took all three doubles points, and LVC never recovered as the Blue Jays went on to get the first two singles point to win 5-0.
It proved to be the final match in a decorated career for senior
Sarah Grodzinski, the 2009 CC Player of the Year who ends up as LVC's all-time leader in singles (75-10) and combined wins (118-40), while sitting second in doubles wins (43-30).
In doubles, Emily Swarr and Jess Russell beat Grodzinski and
Shayna Heintzelman 8-5 at No. 1, and Allison Burkhardt and Madison Pipkin topped
Tam Lobb and
Lauren Fulmer 8-3 at No. 2. Alena Marani and Kristi Noecker blanked
Morgan Brady and
Jess Ferlenda 8-0 at No. 3.
In singles, E-town got wins at Nos. 3 and 5 as Burkhardt gutted out a three-set 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 win over Lobb and Marani beat
Caitlin Bedford 6-0, 6-4 at No. 5.
The unfinished matches were tight for the most part, with Swarr and Grodzinski battling at No. 1 at a set each 3-6, 6-3, 2-3 in the third. Russell was a point away from beating Heintzelman 7-5, 5-2 in the second, and Pipkin likewise was close against Fulmer 7-6 (8-6), 5-3 in the second at No. 4.
