READING, Pa. -
Cameron Prince tied a career-high with 14 points, but it wasn't enough as Alvernia led wire-to-wire to beat Lebanon Valley, 60-51, in Commonwealth Conference play on Saturday.
Prince was the only player to hit double figures scoring for the Dutchmen (4-3, 0-2 CC), while
Joe Meehan had eight with five assists. The Crusaders got big games out their scoring duo of Seth Cornell and Charles Swiggett, who had 17 and 15 points, respectively. A 12-0 run around halftime put Alvernia in control of the game for good.
The teams played evenly on the stat sheet in every category but one: foul shooting. Alvernia went 15-for-27, but LVC had just eight chances - and made two, their fewest since going 1-for-6 against McDaniel in 2006. LVC shot 42% from the floor to Alvernia's 43%, and actually hit more shots (22 to 21) and threes (4 to 3), but the foul shooting proved to be the difference as Alvernia made 12 more and won by nine.
Alvernia never trailed as it held Lebanon Valley without a field goal for the opening 4:27, and the Dutchmen didn't get closer than three at any point during the first half. A
Zach Kebetz longball cut the lead to 24-21 just before the break, but consecutive jumpers by Cory Boone extended the Crusader advantage to 28-21.
The Crusaders kept up the run with eight unanswered points to start the second half, taking a 36-21 lead that LVC never answered to. The Dutchmen got as close as nine three times, but Alvernia answered every time to stop the momentum.
Lebanon Valley will head to Lancaster Bible in non-league action Tuesday night.
