NEW YORK CITY - NYU went on a late 8-0 run to reverse a four-point Lebanon Valley advantage and hold on to win, 65-63, on the second day of the NYU Holiday Classic Sunday.
It was the first meeting between NYU (8-2) and the Dutchmen (6-5) since the 1994 NCAA Championship game, an overtime classic that was won by LVC.
LVC did well to cut down a double-digit lead by NYU in the second half, surging to take the lead midway through the half on
Joe Meehan's layup, then extending it to four with
Sean MacIntosh's three-pointer with 7:23 left to go.
But the Violets answered back with an 8-0 run moments later, capped by Carl Yaffe's triple to take back a four-point lead. The Dutchmen cut the deficit back to a point twice, but after Yaffe drained another three with 2:03 remaining to go back up by four, neither side scored again until
Dan Dunkelberger hit a layup with 18 seconds remaining.
After fouling, Richie Polan drained a pair of freebies for NYU, and two shots in the final seconds by Meehan went off the mark before Dunkelberger made a layup at the buzzer to end the game at 65-63.
Meehan had a game-high 15 points with five assista, five rebounds, and four steals; Dunkelberger added 14 and 7, while MacIntosh and
Jordan Stewart each had 11 points. Andy Stein led NYU with 13 points, and Polan had six points and 10 boards.
LVC committed a season-low nine turnovers while shooting 39.3 percent overall; NYU also took care of the ball, giving it away just 10 times and shooting 45.5 percent overall.
Lebanon Valley returns home Saturday to face Alvernia in a Commonwealth Conference game at 3 p.m. It will be Take A Kid To the Game Day at LVC Gymnasium, with all children 14 and under receiving free admission to the game.
