LANDISVILLE, Pa. - Lebanon Valley captured its first-ever Commonwealth Conference women's tennis championship Sunday with an emphatic 5-2 win over defending champion Elizabethtown.
The Dutchmen (18-3) will now make their first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament, with selections announced Monday, May 4. For head coach
Cliff Myers, in his 16th season, it was the first women's championship, and his day got even better when his men's team also clinched the conference title hours later.
LVC was led by tournament MVP
Sara Wagner, who earned quick wins at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles to help put her team ahead on the unseasonably hot day.
The Dutchmen went up 2-1 after doubles, with Wagner and
Charissa Nordall topping Sarah Poulle and Ashton Heydt, 8-3, at No. 3 before
Kelly Moll and
Jan White beat Kelly Fisher and Erika Belletti, 9-7, at No. 2.
Shayna Heintzelman and
Sarah Grodzinski then battled to a tiebreak with Emily Swarr and Jessica Russell, but fell 9-8 (7-5).
In singles, LVC quickly swung the momentum their way with Wagner's win over Katelyn Roderick, 6-2, 6-0, but E-town made it 3-2 with Russell's 6-2, 6-3 victory against Moll at No. 2.
But the Dutchmen shut the door with Grodzinski's 7-5, 6-1 win over Swarr at No. 1, and Heintzelman clinched it on the second championship point at No. 5, 6-4, 6-4, over Heydt.
Nordall was ahead of Fisher at No. 3, and
Sammy Burkey had split sets with Poulle at No. 4 when the match ended.
Grodzinski set an LVC record with her singles win, moving to 21-2 this season to own the mark for most singles victory in a season.
