ANNVILLE, Pa. -
Jocelyn Novak and
Caitlin Vasey scored 49 seconds apart late in the second half to break a 1-1 deadlock and help #7 LVC top Haverford, 3-1, on Wednesday.
The Dutchmen (11-1) avoided the upset by a dangerous Fords (4-5) team, who were shooting for their second-straight upset of a top-10 team after taking down #9 Johns Hopkins over the weekend.
With her goal, Novak became the fastest player in program history to reach 100 career points. She is the eighth Dutchman to reach the milestone, and the only to do it as a sophomore.
Haverford used some solid defense and midfield play to hold the Dutchmen at bay early on, but
Avery Carter broke through at 22:22 when she took a pass from
Nikki Bomberger off a corner and blasted home from the arc for the first half's only goal.
The Fords pushed out of the break, and leveled the game 2:20 into the half when Margaret Selsor cut in rightside off Roxanne Jaffe's pass.
The tense second half saw chances for both teams, including a quick three-save sequence by
Caitlin Baro to prevent a go-ahead Haverford goal, but it was Novak who broke the deadlock at 60:38 by pouncing on a loose ball and turning for a hard shot on goal.
Vasey added insurance 49 seconds later when she broke loose and beat goalkeeper Maggie Cronin in a one-on-one situation.
LVC held a 17-9 shots advantage, and led 12-6 on penalty corners. Baro made five saves for LVC, and Cronin stopped 10 to keep Haverford in the game.
Lebanon Valley returns to Commonwealth Conference play on Saturday, hosting Shenandoah at 1 p.m. All fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game and join the LVC players in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
