ANNVILLE, Pa. - Lebanon Valley won its fourth game in a row as it held off Alvernia University, 72-63, in a non-conference match-up Wednesday night at The Gym.
Kyle Enoch and
Dan Hodge led the Dutchmen (5-3) with 17 and 16 points, respectively, as they were fed by
Joe Meehan's career-high nine assists.
LVC played relatively mistake-free ball, sending Alvernia (4-5) to the line just nine times and giving away 15 turnovers.
Four Crusaders were in double figures, led by Jeff Amponsah's 14 points. LVC shot a solid 47.1 percent from the floor while holding Alvernia to 37 percent shooting.
Lebanon Valley jumped out to a 7-0 lead but was caught by Alvernia midway through the first period with an 8-0 Crusader run capped by Derek Dubbs' three-pointer. Neither side led by more than four the rest of the half, and LVC ultimately held a two-point edge going into the break after
Eric Humphrey hit an easy layup off a spectacular Meehan dish with five seconds left.
Alvernia took the lead to start the second half, however, on consecutive layups by Tyrone Bradley, but a 5-0 spurt that included an
Anthony Trautman three and a jumper by Meehan put LVC up four, and they would not relinquish the lead the rest of the way.
The Dutchmen pushed the lead to eight points with 2:26 left, but Alvernia threatened on Bradley's layup and a huge three-pointer by David Washington with 1:16 remaining to make it a 66-63 game. After Meehan was fouled and missed his first one-and-one chance, Alvernia took possession and called timeout, but Washington was hit with a technical foul, handing the ball over to Enoch, who sank both foul shots to shift the momentum back to LVC and seal the game.
LVC will break for the holidays before returning to action with a rematch against #13 Ursinus at the Randolph-Macon Tournament on Dec. 29.
