Dutchmen Knock Off #12 Ursinus, 76-72

Box Score

ANNVILLE, Pa.
- Lebanon Valley had four players score in double figures, including 21 points  from senior Kyle Enoch, as they knocked off #12 Ursinus College, 76-72, at the LVC Gymnasium Sunday.

The Dutchmen (2-3) earned their first win over a ranked team since Jan. 7, 2006, when they took down #21 Lincoln in the consolation game of the York College Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. Ursinus was the highest-ranked team the Dutchmen have upset since they beat #5 Franklin & Marshall, 80-76, on Dec. 11, 2004.

The Bears (3-1), ranked 12th in the most recent d3hoops.com national poll, lost for the first time this season after making it to the NCAA Final Four last year.

Enoch's 21 went along with seven rebounds, and Dan Hodge added 15 points and four steals. Anthony Trautman came off the bench to add 14 points, including three longballs in the first half, and Dan Dunkelberger added nine points and 11 rebounds.

Matt Hilton was among four Bears in double figures with 18 points, and Remy Cousart scored 16 points and handed out seven assists.

LVC, outsized by Ursinus, pounded the glass anyway, winning the rebounding battle 43-32, and the Dutchmen caused 20 Ursinus turnovers while giving it away just 14 times.

The Dutchmen shot a sparkling 23-of-28 from the line but missed three in the the last minute to set up some drama after Ursinus cut a 10-point LVC lead with 1:06 to go down to three with 21 seconds left.

LVC overcame a 12-point Ursinus lead in the first half, holding the Bears scoreless for the final 5:53 of the half before John Noonan sank a buzzer-beating three-pointer to take a 33-31 lead into the break.

The Dutchmen immediately controlled the game coming out of the break, taking the lead on consecutive buckets by Hodge four minutes into the half. Ursinus held LVC close, never letting the Dutchmen get up by more than eight, and finally capitalized on Keith Page's jumper and a Cousart layup to retake the lead, 57-56, with 6:53 to go.

LVC answered with a pair of Enoch foul shots and then never relinquished the lead, going on a 10-2 run over the next three minutes that included Grant Becker's three-point play, another Enoch bucket, and three foul shots by Trautman.

By the time Hodge sank a pair of freebies with 1:06 to go, the upset seemed to be securely in hand with a 10-point lead, but the Bears, showing why they are among the nation's best, stormed back with a three-point play by Cousart to cut the lead to seven with 53 ticks left.

Trautman then missed a layup at the other end, and Matt Hilton canned a three-pointer with 31 seconds to go to make it 73-69. With an intentional foul, Hodge went to the line and missed both tries, and after Cousart missed a try inside, Dunkelberger was whistled with a loose-ball foul. Cousart was able to make one free throws, and Becker matched him at the other end with 17 seconds to go.

Still needing two buckets to tie or take the lead, Ursinus' Matt Brundage turned the ball over with 12 seconds to go, and Enoch sank both of his foul tries to ice the upset for LVC.

LVC will head to Penn State Harrisburg on Wednesday; that game will be aired live on WMSS 91.1 FM and GoDutchmen.com.
