Box Score
ANNVILLE, Pa. - Hood College hit a late 11-0 run to pull out of a tie game and beat Lebanon Valley College, 78-70, in the Rinso Marquette Tournament championship game.
The Blazers (2-1) won the tournament for the second time, having previously won in 2006. Ryan Junghans was named tournament MVP with 19 points Saturday and 25 points against New Jersey City University on Friday.
Joining Junghans on the all-tournament team were Hood's Tim Abercrombie, LVC's
Dan Dunkelberger and
Joe Meehan, NJCU's Reshawn Smalls, and Penn State Altoona's Kirk Peters.
Penn State Altoona beat NJCU, 80-65, in the third-place game.
Abercrombie and J'Air Brady each scored 16 for Hood, but it was Garrett Williams who nailed a pair of crucial three-pointers with less than five minutes to go that turned a 57-57 game into a 65-57 lead.
Dan Hodge led LVC with 16 points, and
Sean MacIntosh scored 14. Meehan ended with six points and seven assists, and Dunkelberger hit teammates to the tune of five assists to go with his 10 points.
After struggling at the line the last two games, LVC shot a much-improved 18-of-20 from the stripe to stay in the game.
LVC led early but fell behind midway through the first half on a 12-0 Hood swing. The Dutchmen got back in the game just before the half with an 8-0 spurt capped by Grant Becker's put-back, but Junghans converted a four-point play with 47 seconds left to take the lead. Dunkelberger tied the game just before the buzzer with a pair of foul shots.
Hood again led in the second half, but LVC worked five ties to get it to 57-57 with 5:15 to go. That set off a Blazer rally led by a Junghans three and back-to-back treys by Williams to effectively put the game out of reach.
LVC had four fouls to give, but Hood hit all eight of their foul shots once they were in the bonus.
The Dutchmen head to rival Franklin & Marshall College Tuesday night for an 8 p.m. start.
