ANNVILLE, Pa. - Lebanon Valley College broke four program records and qualified three to MAC Championships as the men's and women's swimming teams beat FDU-Florham on Senior Day Saturday.
The men (7-5) prevailed 111-85, while the women (4-9) won 118-71. The men's win ensured the program's third-straight winning season.
Each team broke a pair of program records. In a very fast women's 400 IM, freshman Ally Birli broke teammate Ashten O'Brien's record with a 5:43.34, her eighth record of the season. O'Brien also competed and would have reset her record with a 5:44.20 if not for Birli being a second faster.
In the men's edition of the 400 IM, junior Kevin Carney broke his second record in as many days, touching the wall in 5:07.29 to reset his own record by over two seconds.
A pair of relays also set marks, both in the 400-meter free. The men's relay of Johnny Shoenberger, Greg Kauffman, Jeff Bush, and Carney took two seconds off the old record with a 3:55.56, and the women's team of Lauren Horst, Birli, Lisa Niethamer, and Allison Sweigart finished in 4:30.68, taking a whopping 15 seconds off the record set in 2002.
In a last chance to qualify for MAC Championships, the Dutchmen had three meet qualifying marks. Andrew Goetz made it in two events, the 100 free (59.29) and 200 free (2:09.92), and Tony Shipkowski qualified in the 50 free (26.23). Horst made it in the 100 free in 1:07.25.
LVC will take two weeks off to prepare for MAC Championships, which start Feb. 8 at the Catholic Youth Center in Wilkes-Barre.
