ANNVILLE, Pa. - Freshman King Saah scored in the 22nd minute as the Lebanon Valley College men's soccer team defeated Moravian College, 1-0, Wednesday at Herbert Field.
The Flying Dutchmen (6-2) won their third in a row. The Greyhounds (2-5) dropped their fourth straight.
Both sides had quality chances during the course of the game, starting with senior Dan Pitonyak's free kick opportunity 14 minutes in. Pitonyak curled the ball on net but 'keeper Chris Nederostek made a diving stop to to deny the goal.
Saah gave the Valley all the scoring it needed with an acrobatic volley midway through the first half. Senior Adam Schies swung wide on the right and crossed a ball across the goal face, which Saah met perfectly as he laid out horizontally in mid-air. The freshman has now tallied six goals and 14 points in eight games.
Pitonyak just missed again moments later when his shot hit the crossbar, and junior Jared Fisher nearly scored in the 41st minute with a point-blank header that deflected off Nederostek's hand and hit the post.
Moravian had several chances in the second half, but LVC's defense held tough and did not allow a shot over the final seven minutes of the game.
Junior Tim Mehl made three saves - all in the second half - to earn his third shutout of the season. Nederostek made three stops.
A largely even game offensively, LVC held a 15-11 advantage in shots and 6-5 edge in corner kicks. LVC outshot Moravian 10-2 in the second half, but the 'Hounds turned it around in the second, leading 9-5.
