Swimming Splits With Cabrini

ANNVILLE, Pa. - The Lebanon Valley College swim teams split its meet with Cabrini College Saturday, with the men cruising to a 136-63 win and the women falling, 126-79.

The men's team (4-3) had six winners, while the women (1-7) finished first in four events.

For the men, freshman Tony Shipkowski surged at the end to capture the 100-meter butterfly in 1:07.85, just eight-hundreths of a second ahead of Cabrini's Matt Piontkowski. Junior Kevin Carney won the 800 free by over a minute and a half, in 9:25.73, then won the 100 backstroke in 1:03.97.

Sophomore Johnny Schoenberger took the 100 free in 58.04, and Andrew Goetz won the 400 free in 4:44.97. Lebanon Valley's 400 free relay team of Jared Wilkerson, Brett Wimmer, David Gardner and Goetz won in 4:16.47.

Junior Lauren Horst highlighted the meet for the women, winning the 800- and 400-meter freestyles and taking second to teammate Lisa Niethamer in the 100 free. Horst was just a second off the school record in the 800 with her 10:48.86 finish.

In a fantastic finish, Horst won the 400 by a fingertip, finishing in 5:17.52, just two-hundreths of a second ahead of Cabrini's Meghan O'Leary and two-tenths ahead of Jenna Doughtery.

Niethamer won the 100 free in 1:06.29, and also captured the 50 free in 29.23. Freshman Ally Birli finished second in the 200 IM in a MAC-qualifying time of 2:41.97.

The Dutchmen will take over a month off for the holidays before going to Ocean County College Jan. 12 at noon.
