ANNVILLE, Pa. - No. 10 Messiah College scored two goals in the final 7:18 of the game to break a 1-1 tie and win the Commonwealth Conference field hockey championship, 3-1, over No. 2 Lebanon Valley College Saturday.
The Dutchmen (19-1) lost for the first time this season after a program-record 19 straight wins. The Falcons (14-4) scored three unanswered goals as they earned the automatic bid the NCAA tournament. Messiah defender Brittany Godshall earned tournament MVP honors.
Lebanon Valley will now have to wait and see if they receive an at-large bid to the tournament. The field will be announced Sunday night at 10 p.m. on ncaasports.com.
LVC had a chance to go up with a penalty stroke at 54:31, but Christine Schairer's attempt sailed wide. The Dutchmen played the entire second half without Commonwealth Conference MVP Mimi Sullivan, who suffered an injury in the first half.
It was 10th time that LVC and Messiah had met for the MAC or Commonwealth championship, and Messiah has now won six of those meetings.
The game started with Messiah pressuring, and the Falcons nearly scored in the seventh minute if not for Krista Freitag's defensive save.
Sullivan came back and opened the scoring in the 11th minute when she tipped in a blazing cross from Alex Wolfe to put the Valley up 1-0.
Messiah answered six minutes later when Elizabeth Ziegler shot a centering feed from Katie Love, and the score stayed knotted until late in the second half.
The Dutchmen seemed to get the better opportunities in the second half, and it culminated with Schairer's missed stroke in the 55th minute. Messiah capitalized on the momentum change and punched through with 7:18 left in the game with Lisa Strausbaugh scored the gamewinner.
Lindsey Hunter added the insurance two minutes later on a left-side shot.
LVC outshot Messiah, 13-9, but Falcon goalkeeper Ashley Mowrey had an outstanding game, making nine saves. Messiah held an 11-9 edge in corners. Caitlin Baro made three saves as she suffered her first loss of the season.
