CHESTER, Pa. - Widener University's Bill James hit a late equalizer to deny Lebanon Valley College its first Commonwealth Conference win as the two sides battled to a 2-2 draw Wednesday night.
The Dutchmen (6-8-2, 0-3-1 CC) led 2-1 until Widener's (7-9-1, 1-2-1 CC) James scored with 3:58 left in regulation. LVC had come back from 1-0 down.
Frank Nolan opened the scoring for Widener 4:55 into the game with a 20-yarder that banged in off the right post.
The Dutchmen leveled in the 37th minute when Joe Kopchick hit a long-range shot just inside the left post. The Dutchmen came out of the break and took the lead when Zach Barkus scored on a 25-yard shot thanks to Dave Sodl's assist.
But Widener kept pressing, and finally found their second goal when James floated a shot over Tim Mehl to make it 2-2.
Neither side had a quality chance in the first overtime, but the second OT proved to be more dramatic. Dan Pitonyak had his header saved by Marty Squiccarini after a corner kick, and Widener nearly scored the golden goal when Justin McCall's blast hit the post halfway through. McCalls next shot was saved, and Pitonyak again couldn't break through off the counter.
LVC held a 12-11 edge in shots while Widener led 5-1 in corners. Mehl made five saves whiile Squiccarini stopped three.
Lebanon Valley will close out the regular season Saturday, hosting Lycoming at 2 p.m.
