Kelly Breaks Records, But Football Loses to Albright

ANNVILLE, Pa – For the second week in a row, a Lebanon Valley College football player set an assortment of school records. And for the second week in a row, the Dutchmen were victimized by a last-minute game-winning drive.

Last week, sophomore receiver Adam Brossman set or tied four school records in LVC's 38-35 loss to Moravian in which the Greyhounds won on a field goal with four seconds left. This time, junior quarterback Dan Kelly set or tied five school records as Albright College rallied to defeat the Dutchmen on a 19-yard touchdown pass from John Port to Andy Sorice with 22 seconds on the clock, giving the Lions (5-5, 4-5 MAC) a 40-39 victory in a Middle Atlantic Conference contest Saturday afternoon at Arnold Field in the season finale for both teams.

The Dutchmen lost by a field goal or less for the fourth time this season and for the third game in a row. Lebanon Valley also finished the season with five losses by a touchdown or less.

Kelly set Lebanon Valley career records for passing yards (4,182), touchdown passes (41), and completions (320). He also set a single-season school record for touchdown passes (21) and tied the school's single-game record for touchdown passes (five) for the second game in a row. His career touchdown pass record eclipsed a mark that had stood for 52 years, as current Lebanon Valley golf coach and former LVC football head coach Lou Sorrentino '54 threw 37 touchdown passes from 1950-53.

Kelly came within 17 yards of the Lebanon Valley single-season record for passing yards, as he finished with 2,117 yards for the year. Brossman piled up 990 receiving yards for the season, three short of the school record.

Albright (5-5, 4-5 MAC) trailed 39-34 with 1:54 left before driving 71 yards on 11 plays. After throwing his touchdown pass to Sorice, Port kneeled on the ensuing two-point conversion.

Following a 26-yard kick return from sophomore Clint Vinju, Lebanon Valley (2-8, 2-7 MAC) received the ball at its own 42, and there were still eight seconds left after an incomplete pass. Kelly then hit Brossman deep downfield with a 36-yard pass to the Albright-22, but the clock ran out just as Brossman made the catch, and the Dutchmen were unable to call their final timeout.

The two starting quarterbacks combined for 621 yards passing and nine touchdown passes. Port completed 32 of 49 aerials for 300 yards and four touchdowns while Kelly had 321 yards and five touchdowns on 20-of-31 passing. He also ran for a touchdown.

The game featured four ties and four lead changes, and neither team led by more than seven. The two sides combined for 929 total yards.

Brossman finished with eight receptions for 140 yards and two touchdowns while senior receiver Luke Rendine caught seven passes for 111 yards and a touchdown for the Dutchmen. Two of Vinju's three receptions went for touchdowns, including a 63-yarder that put Lebanon Valley in front 39-34 with 6:56 to go.

Bryon Haupt caught nine passes for 110 yards for Albright while Sorice finished with six receptions, 71 yards, and three touchdown catches. Vincent Andrews led all players with 94 yards rushing and one touchdown on 26 carries for the Lions.

Albright capitalized on five Lebanon Valley turnovers, converting four into touchdowns. The Lions did not turn the ball over the entire game.

After Vinju's touchdown reception, Albright used up 4:27 on a 12-play, 35-yard drive. The Lions faced a fourth-and-14 at the LVC-26, but Port's pass fell incomplete, giving the Dutchmen the ball back with 2:24 to go.

After rushing for one yard, Lebanon Valley was called for a false start penalty. An incomplete pass made it third-and-14, and a nine-yard run from Kelly was five yards short of a first down, forcing LVC to punt for the first time in the game. A 40-yard Brossman kick was downed, putting the ball at the Albright-29 before the Lions' game-winning drive.

Sophomore tailback Ryan Brennan led the Dutchmen with 65 yards rushing on 14 carries while Kelly added 63 yards on 11 rushes.

Vinju finished with a career-high 188 all-purpose yards. He had five kick returns for 111 yards.

Senior linebacker Chris Weaver and freshman linebacker Brian Cottone made a game-high 14 tackles apiece for Lebanon Valley while freshman defensive end Brian Drew made 12 stops.
