ANNVILLE, Pa – Junior receiver Adam Brossman caught 14 passes for 337 yards, both school records, and senior quarterback Dan Kelly passed for a school-record 430 yards and five touchdowns in what could have been his final collegiate game as Lebanon Valley defeated host Albright College 55-33 in Middle Atlantic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Shirk Stadium.
With the win, Lebanon Valley (6-4, 5-4 MAC), which also broke a school record for total offense (688 yards), has clinched its first winning season since 1992, when the Flying Dutchmen finished 7-3. The Valley also won three games in a row for the first time since 1992 and snapped an 11-game losing streak to Albright, defeating the Lions for the first time since 1994.
Lebanon Valley will now await a possible ECAC playoff game bid. Pairings will be announced early Monday afternoon.
The win marked Jim Monos' 139th game coached at Lebanon Valley, as he passed Lou Sorrentino '54 for the school record.
The Dutchmen also racked up 55 points in their last game, a 55-21 win over Moravian last Saturday. It was the first time Lebanon Valley has ever scored 50 points two games in a row, and the team's 110 points over the last two weeks marks the highest output in back-to-back games since 1914.
Brossman also tied three different single-season school records. He had three touchdown catches to tie his own single-season school record of 15 set last season. Also, his 14 receptions upped his season total to 62, which ties the LVC record set by Eric Stouch in 1992. In addition, Brossman scored 20 points (three touchdowns and a two-point conversion) to tie his own single-season scoring record of 94 points set last year.
Kelly, who broke the school record for touchdown passes in a game (six) against Moravian last week, was nearly flawless against Albright, completing 21 of 25 passes without throwing an interception. He also had a rushing touchdown.
Freshman tailback Charlie Parker ran for 99 yards and one touchdown on 21 carries for the Dutchmen. Parker now has 700 yards rushing for the season, as he moved into second on the school's single-season freshman rushing yardage list.
It was a good day for quarterbacks with the last name Kelly, as Tanner Kelly threw for 328 yards and four touchdowns for Albright (2-8, 2-7 MAC).
The Lions took a 7-0 lead on the game's first play from scrimmage, as Tanner Kelly hit Nate Romig for a 74-yard score. Parker answered for LVC, rushing into the end zone from 3 yards out with 8:06 left in the first quarter. The extra point was no good, and it was a 7-6 game at the end of the period.
Brossman put the Dutchmen on top for good when he fagged in a 6-yard touchdown pass, then caught a two-point conversion to make it 14-7 with 10:47 left in the opening half. Kelly broke free for an 18-yard touchdown run with 4:17 left in the stanza, and a Josh Evans extra point gave LVC a 21-7 advantage. The Lions pulled to within a touchdown on Raymond Keshel's 42-yard touchdown run 3:25 before halftime.
The first five possessions of the third quarter resulted in a touchdown, which turned into a bit of a scoring clinic for the Dutchmen. LVC outscored Albright 27-13 in the stanza and found the end zone on all four of its possessions.
At the start of the quarter it was Lebanon Valley's turn to score on the half's first play from scrimmage, as Dan Kelly connected with Brossman for a 67-yard touchdown pass. Evans kick made it 28-14.
Albright cut the deficit to eight when Tanner Kelly threw his second touchdown pass of the day, a 15-yarder to Vincent Andrews before a failed PAT with 12:38 left in the third quarter.
Brossman and Kelly needed only two plays to light up the scoreboard on the ensuing possession, hooking up for a 67-yard scoring strike. After a missed extra point, the Dutchmen led 34-20 with 11:25 on the clock.
The Lions pulled back to within a touchdown on a Tanner Kelly-to-Keith Allen 15-yard scoring play that made it 34-27 with 9:14 still remaining in the quarter.
The Dutchmen found paydirt twice more before the end of the period. Senior tight end Dave Zimmerman hauled in a 6-yard touchdown pass with 5:45 on the clock, and Parker had a 16-yard touchdown reception with 2:39 left. Freshman Dan DiBona booted the PAT after both scores, giving LVC a 48-27 lead.
Albright scored early in the fourth quarter on Tanner Kelly's final touchdown pass, a 2-yarder to Stephen Asay that made it 48-33 with 12:21 to go following a failed two-point conversion rush. Senior David Ochoa answered for the Dutchmen with a 1-yard touchdown run with 7:18 left, and another DiBona point-after set the final score.
