How It HappenedLebanon Valley capped off an excited Homecoming Weekend on Sunday afternoon at Hersheypark Arena. For the first time since joining the ACHA Division 1, Lebanon Valley's ice hockey team defeated a team that sat in the No. 1 spot. The Dutchmen upended No. 1 Stony Brook 6-3 and improved their record to 2-2-0-0, while the Seawolves dropped to 3-1-0-0.
Early on in the game, LVC saw several chances and was outplaying Stony Brook, but had no goals to show for it. The Dutchmen were all over the ice and creating several scoring chances, however it was Stony Brook who broke through in the first period and scored the contest's first goal as Frank Coscia found the back of the net just under 14 minutes into the period to make it 1-0 Seawolves. Stony Brook held its one-goal advantage heading into the first intermission, but it was LVC who dominated most of the period, outshooting Stony Brook 14-7.
Midway through the second period, the Dutchmen finally struck as
Travis Acker tied the game at 1-1 with a goal off of an assist from Paul Hefferin. Just over a minute later,
Andy Thurby put the Dutchmen ahead 2-1 thanks to an assist from
Mike Straub and LVC went into the second intermission clinging to the one-goal advantage.
Just 20 game minutes away from pulling off the upset, the Dutchmen increased the lead just over a minute and a half into the third when
Bryan Hovanec netted a goal from
John Wise and Hefferin for the 3-1 lead. Under two minutes later, Hovanec scored his second of the game off feeds from Wise and
Travis Ackerman for the 4-1 lead. With
Brenden Manquen and the LVC defense performing well and keeping it a three-goal advantage, the Dutchmen scored 11:35 into the final period when
Eric Higgins netted his first of the game, which was assisted by
Jacob Horst, for the 5-1 lead.
Later in the period, LVC began to pour it on when Hefferin scored his first of the game from Wise. The Seawolves added two late goals, but LVC held on for the thrilling 6-3 victory over the formerly undefeated Stony Brook squad.
Special TeamsThe Dutchmen's power play unit was on point this afternoon, as LVC scored four times while on the power play.
Stars of the GameThe third star of the game was Wise, as the freshman d-man continued to rack up the assists with three more this afternoon. Hefferin was named the second star of the memorable game, scoring a goal and adding two assists to total three points. First-star honors went Hovanec who scored two goals, one of which ended up to be the game-winner.

Don Parsons. "The captains led the way, and everyone else followed suit".
Inside the Numbers - So far this season, the Dutchmen are averaging 28.3 shots per game, but was way above that average today with 38 shots.
- Manquen earned the win, stopping 22 Stony Brook shots.
