HAVERFORD, Pa. – Maggie McAteer scored her first goal of the season as the Lebanon Valley College field hockey team battled through one of the most unusual contests of the season on Monday, returning to Haverford College three weeks after a weather delay suspended play at halftime. The Flying Dutchmen rallied to erase a late deficit before ultimately falling 2-1 on a Haverford goal in the final minute.
The matchup began on Sept. 1 before severe weather halted play after the opening 30 minutes with Haverford holding a 1-0 lead. When the teams reconvened on Sept. 21 to complete the second half, LVC came out energized and continued to pressure the Fords. Haverford scored early with a goal in the fifth minute off a rebounded shot that was saved by
Ella Weidenhammer. LVC pressed for the tying goal but shots by
Abby Rodenberger,
Claire Weidenhammer, and
Danika Setlock were saved in the first quarter. The Dutchmen continued to battle in the second quarter and nearly evened the score right before halftime as
Lilah Shaub had back-to-back shots that were saved.
Goalkeeper
Ella Weidenhammer was outstanding between the pipes, turning aside 17 shots and keeping the Flying Dutchmen within striking distance throughout the game. She made several key stops in the third and fourth quarters as Haverford generated pressure on the defense. LVC nearly found the equalizer early in the third period when
Claire Weidenhammer forced a defensive save which led to a penalty corner opportunity. Defensively, the Flying Dutchmen also received a crucial defensive save from
Alexis Nasuta to keep the margin at one goal.
The persistence paid off midway through the fourth quarter. After another strong attacking sequence, McAteer buried her first goal of the season at the 53:28 mark, with
Jillian Tait earning the assist, to tie the game at 1-1. The Flying Dutchmen continued to battle, but Haverford capitalized on a penalty corner with just 33 seconds remaining. Following a save by Weidenhammer, Lily Gover converted the rebound to give the hosts a 2-1 advantage.
